It is most likely the drum of your hubs basically getting the rust worn off if anything. I wouldn't say this is a typical issue though. If it was anything to do with the wiring or electrical side your brake controller would show that it wasn't connected during the time it wasn't working.

We have found that while not considered to be as much of a premium brand like the Dexter assemblies they work just as well and happen to cost a lot less. To put it a different way if I needed assemblies for my trailer thats what I would go with since the performance is the same as the more expensive options.

The wire is likely just a version of automotive wire that is made more rigid so that it is easier to route it through tight spaces. Or it could be shielded wire or even cross-link wire. If you need some wire for electric brakes you can use # 10-1-1.

There is a way to determine the left from the right without taking off your hub for the Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA.
Take a look at the back of the assembly, and you should see where the wires are sticking out and they are attached with a little clip; I have added a photo of the back of the # AKEBRK-35-SA for reference. Your tow package port on your 2005 Toyota Tundra will either be above the emergency brake pedal (even taped to it), or behind the kick plate panel to the left of the emergency brake pedal.
